What is the Liturgy of the Word for Children?

It is the presentation of the Liturgy of the Word to children from ages six through twelve. During the celebration of the 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Sunday Masses, the children participate in the same liturgy as the adults, but at levels appropriate to their ages and development.

What happens during the Liturgy of the Word?

The children leave the assembly after the opening prayer, gather in their own room, and sing a gathering song. The two readings are proclaimed—the first reading and the Gospel. The adult leaders then guide the children in a discussion of how the scripture’s message applies to their own lives. After this, the children recite the Creed, add their Prayers of the Faithful, and then return to the adult assembly.
